How to pay your bill by Direct Debit
A Direct Debit lets you pay bills automatically, so you don’t have to worry about missing the due date.
All we need from you is your bank account details and the amount you’d like to pay each month using one of the enrolment options below.
You can also set up your Direct Debit on your Amex App. You will find this option under the Account tab.
Please note, online enrolment is not available for Direct Debit payments from Joint Accounts.
Download and complete the relevant enrolment form below and return it to us.
You can arrange to have your Card repayment automatically debited from your bank account each month. You’ll still receive your monthly statement so you can review your charges. If you have queries about any of the charges on your statement, call the number on the back of your Card before your payment date.
Otherwise, the payment will be automatically debited from your bank account on the Direct Debit payment date listed on your statement.

Understanding your bill
What exactly is a Credit Card minimum repayment?
The minimum repayment is the very least you have to pay by the payment due date on your monthly statement. This is set at a minimum of $10 or 3% of your closing balance – whichever is greater.
Your monthly Credit Card statement includes the closing balance and a minimum monthly repayment amount.
While the closing balance is the total amount outstanding, the minimum repayment shows what you must pay by the specified due date to keep your Account in good standing.
Although making minimum repayments can give you more breathing space to pay off your balance over time, it’s worth bearing in mind that it can also result in ongoing debt.
What happens if I’m not able to pay my minimum repayment?

Can I set up automatic payments?
Automatic payment plans are a great way to ensure that you pay your bills on time. If you set up a direct debit to automatically pay a certain amount every month, you’ll always have the peace of mind of knowing you’ve made a payment. You can also opt-in for SMS or email alerts to remind you that payment is due.
How does the type of payment I make affect interest charged?
If you pay the minimum repayment, you still get charged interest. It will appear on your next statement. If you have been paying the minimum payment amount for several months and then decide to pay in full, interest will still appear from the previous month’s closing balance. This is known as trailing interest and is the amount of interest that accrues between when your Credit Card bill is sent and when payment is received.
What is a late payment fee?
If you miss a payment, you may need to pay a late payment fee. This amount will be specified as a late payment message in your statement.
Pay off your Credit Card more efficiently
You have several options that will help you effectively manage your Credit Card balance. Knowing the best time to make purchases will ensure you make the most of your interest free period.
For example, provided you do not have an outstanding balance on your Account, if you purchase an item at the beginning of the cycle you will receive 55 days interest free. Whereas if you buy something 20 days into the cycle, you will have 35 days without being charged any interest.

How to pay your bill online
Paying a Credit Card bill can be done through your internet banking. Just follow the steps below:

Paying over the phone
If it’s easier for you, you can pay your bill via Telephone banking.
To pay your bill over the phone, simply contact your bank or log in to your online banking to make immediate or scheduled payments to your Card Account. Please allow up to three days for your payment to be cleared.

Paying in person
Important Information – Payments at New Zealand Post will cease from 29 August 2022.
Effective 29 August 2022, you will no longer be able to make in store payments for your American Express bill at New Zealand Post. For more information on how to pay, see above payment options.
You can still pay your bill in person until 28 August 2022
To pay your bill in person, simply visit your nearest New Zealand PostShop and bring with you a paper statement (sent to you by mail). Please note, a printed statement from your online Account cannot be used for this purpose.
Cash payments made at New Zealand Post are limited to either $7,000 or the amount owing on your current statement, whichever is less. Please allow up to three days for your payment to be cleared.

How do I sign up for paperless statements?
1. Log in to your Online Account
2. Go to ‘Account Management’
3. Select ‘Alerts, Communications & Privacy’ then ‘Statement Delivery Options’
4. Tick the box that says ‘I want to go Paperless’ and click ‘Confirm’.
